Thick Chocolate Matcha Sandwich Rich Matcha Review – Japanese Snack by Meiji
Introduction
This article reviews Thick Chocolate Matcha Sandwich Rich Matcha by Meiji, focusing on its flavor, texture, ingredients, and allergen information.
At first glance in the store, this package creates an unusually strong sense of anticipation for matcha.
That alone makes it hard to ignore.
Packaging
The front of the package features an image of matcha chocolate sandwiched between cocoa biscuits, along with a generous pile of matcha powder.
The entire design, including the green background, strongly emphasizes the matcha theme.
Naturally, this raises expectations for both flavor and aroma.
When it comes to matcha products, the next question is always: where is the matcha from?
According to Meiji’s international website, this product uses Nishio matcha.
Meiji also produces other sweets using Nishio matcha, such as Takenoko-no-Sato Matcha.

In my previous review, I noted that Nishio matcha has a deep color, rich umami, and smooth character without strong bitterness.
This makes it suitable for processed sweets, as it allows both intensity and balance.
According to official information, this product uses first-harvest Nishio matcha (51% of the matcha component).
That explains why it is labeled as “Rich Matcha.”
Even before opening the box, it already feels promising.
Inside the Package
When opening the box, the contents are individually wrapped.
On the inside of the lid, it explains that the product uses first-harvest matcha produced through traditional methods such as stone grinding, known for its deep green color, strong umami, and aroma.
The phrase “dense and rich” is also highlighted again.
Appearance
After opening the inner package, the product looks very similar to the image on the box.
The matcha chocolate appears slightly darker than in the printed image, suggesting a higher concentration of matcha.
When I brought it close to my nose, I could smell a combination of rich matcha and a subtle cocoa biscuit aroma.
Taste & Texture
Since the matcha chocolate was not clearly visible, I broke one piece to check the inside before eating.
The deep green color stands out and clearly represents matcha.
Before eating, I followed the instructions on the package:
“This product hardens when chilled. Please let it sit at room temperature (23–25°C) for 30–40 minutes before consuming.”
After preparing it as instructed, I tried it.
First, the biscuit draws attention.
It has a slightly sweet taste and a texture closer to crunchy rather than light crispy.
There is a noticeable graininess, yet it does not stick to the teeth and leaves no residue, which shows high quality.
The matcha chocolate inside is also well balanced.
It has sweetness with controlled bitterness, allowing the umami and distinctive matcha flavor to linger in the back of the mouth.
When the cocoa biscuit and matcha chocolate are combined, it creates a level of balance that feels surprisingly high for a product available in regular retail stores.
Each piece is quite filling, which explains why the product is packaged as two pieces per pouch.
