Mix & Match Madness! Creating New Flavors with Korokoro Hi-Chew’s 4-Flavor Assortment

Korokoro Hi-Chew Title

INTRODUCTION

This article reviews Korokoro Hi-Chew and explains its flavor, texture, ingredients, and allergen information based on the product sold in Japan.

When people think of Hi-Chew, they usually think of one of Japan’s most iconic soft candy brands. That long-running name from Morinaga took on a completely new form with the release of Korokoro Hi-Chew on July 29, 2025. Instead of the usual rectangular Hi-Chew shape, this version comes in small round pieces that really do feel “korokoro,” or little rolling candy balls. Morinaga officially describes it as a bite-sized soft candy with four flavors in one box: grape, strawberry, melon, and soda, designed so that different combinations can create new flavor experiences.

That freedom in how you eat it is the biggest charm of this product. The flavors come out randomly, and just changing the combination changes the taste in your mouth. It is a very different kind of fun from traditional candy. Morinaga even highlights the “mix-and-match” element as part of the product concept, including examples like strawberry + melon = watermelon-like flavor.

From children to adults, this is the kind of candy that makes it hard to stop reaching into the box.

Packaging

The moment I pick up the package, the first thing that jumps out is the vivid use of color.

Purple for grape, red for strawberry, green for melon, and light blue for soda are all used in a bright, pop-style design that stands out easily on a store shelf. Morinaga’s official release also describes the package as a bright, pop design in an easy-to-carry size, which matches the impression very well.

On the front of the package, there are also illustrated flavor combination ideas, and that alone already makes the whole thing more exciting before you even open it.

The combinations shown on the package are four fun suggestions:

  • grape + melon = muscat flavor
  • grape + strawberry = mixed berry flavor
  • strawberry + melon = watermelon flavor
  • grape + strawberry + soda = energy drink flavor

These are manufacturer-suggested combinations, but the real appeal is that the possibilities clearly go beyond those four. Just thinking, “What should I try next?” already becomes part of the fun before the candy even reaches your mouth. Morinaga’s official release confirms the idea of creating new flavors by combining different pieces, and specifically gives strawberry + melon as an example that becomes a watermelon-like taste.

Appearance

Korokoro Hi-Chew assorted candy pieces

Once I open the package, I see a pile of colorful little candies packed inside.

Purple, red, green, and light blue clearly represent the four flavors, and just looking at them already feels cheerful. The size is smaller than a typical one-bite candy, and the rounded shape really does match the sound-symbolic name “korokoro.”

Compared with regular Hi-Chew Mini, these feel even more playful in appearance. Each piece is small, round, and easy to pick up one by one.

If you look closely, the surface has a nice glossy finish, and the colors give the candy a cute, slightly puffy look. The shapes are neat and consistent, which gives a strong impression of careful production quality. When I place a few pieces in my hand, they honestly look more like colorful beads than candy, and they have the kind of appearance that makes you want to take a photo.

The aroma is also very pleasant from the moment the package is opened. Because several flavors are mixed together in one box, the scent feels more complex than a single-flavor candy. Instead of one clear note, it gives off a mixed-fruit kind of sweetness that feels soft and inviting.

Taste & Texture

I started by tasting each flavor on its own first.

The outside has a coating, so the first sensation in the mouth is a slight crispness. There is a faint little crackle when you bite through the surface, and that immediately sets it apart from the usual Hi-Chew texture. After that outer layer breaks, the soft chewy interior starts releasing the fruit flavor gradually.

The grape flavor has a solid depth and tang to it, which makes sense because Morinaga lists concentrated grape juice in the ingredients. The strawberry flavor has a sweet-tart character that reminds me a bit of jam, with a rich aroma to match. The melon flavor is gentler and creamier, with a nostalgic sweetness that feels very Japanese in a nice way. The soda flavor is refreshing and cleaner in the finish, and when it is combined with other pieces, it works surprisingly well as a kind of bridge between flavors. Morinaga’s official product page confirms the use of concentrated grape juice and the four-flavor concept, while the mix-and-match theme is central to the product’s launch description.

Even just one piece tastes good enough on its own.

But because each piece is so small, you end up putting in two or three anyway.

Then I moved on to the real point of this product: mixing flavors together.

I tried grape and strawberry at the same time, chewed them together, and let the taste blend slowly. What came out was neither pure grape nor pure strawberry, but a richer berry-like flavor somewhere in between. When I let the mixture stay on my tongue a little longer instead of swallowing too quickly, the sweetness and acidity blended more smoothly, and the finish left a gentle aftertaste. At that moment, I had the feeling that this might be the real way to enjoy Korokoro Hi-Chew.

The grape + melon combination spread a muscat-like sweetness across the mouth.
The strawberry + melon pairing really did create something that reminded me of watermelon, to the point where I almost wanted to say out loud, “That actually does taste like watermelon.”
And the grape + strawberry + soda combination created a strange but addictive flavor that really does lean in the direction of an energy drink-like taste.

The more slowly I let the mixed flavors melt and settle on the tongue after chewing, the more interesting the changes became. That, to me, is the true charm of Korokoro Hi-Chew.

By the way, my favorite combination is grape + melon + soda.

If you ask me exactly what flavor that becomes, I honestly do not know how to answer neatly, but that is part of the fun.

Texture-wise, the contrast between the slightly crisp outer coating and the soft chewy inside is very pleasant, and it does not feel too hard on the jaw. Compared with regular Hi-Chew, this version feels easier to keep eating over time because each piece is small and the chew feels lighter.

The box is also compact, so it is easy to carry in a bag or pocket. That portability is definitely one of its strengths.

Final Thoughts

Korokoro Hi-Chew is more than just a sweet candy. It feels like a playable candy.

The best part is that the experience changes depending on how you combine the four flavors. Even if you only try the manufacturer’s suggested pairings, it is already fun, but the real charm is finding your own original combinations and deciding which one works best for you.

I would especially recommend this product for families with children, because the colorful appearance and game-like way of eating it make the snack itself part of the entertainment. It also works very well for adults who want a small mood change during work or study, since the individual pieces are tiny and easy to eat little by little. And it is a great fit for sharing with friends or family, where the fun comes not only from eating it, but from talking about which combination tastes best.

Of course, people who want a heavier, more filling kind of snack may find it a little light. And when you first start mixing flavors, there may be moments when you cannot even tell exactly what you are tasting anymore.

But honestly, that confusion is part of the appeal.

So go ahead and find your own mix flavor.
