INTRODUCTION

This article reviews Koala’s March Strawberry and explains its flavor, texture, ingredients, and allergen information based on the product sold in Japan.

Koala’s March is one of Japan’s long-selling snack classics, with fans all over the world. Among the lineup, the strawberry flavor is one of the most beloved standards. It may feel like it has “always” been there, but Lotte’s official history page shows that Koala’s March itself launched in 1984, while the strawberry flavor was added in 1992. So it is not quite “over 40 years old” as a strawberry flavor, but it has still been loved for more than three decades, which is already impressive enough.

You can find this snack not only across Japan, but also in supermarkets and Asian grocery stores in many other countries. Lotte’s global Koala’s March site presents it as an internationally recognized cookie-and-chocolate snack with hundreds of adorable koala designs, and that worldwide familiarity is part of its charm.

A lot of people probably remember eating it as children. But when you try it again as an adult, it becomes surprisingly easy to notice how carefully made it actually is. This time, I want to review Koala’s March Strawberry from the package all the way to the taste.

Packaging

Koala's March Strawberry package

The first thing that jumps out the moment I pick up the box is the bright strawberry-pink world of the package.

The whole box is covered with ripe strawberry illustrations and pink-colored koala characters, and just looking at it lifts my mood. It has that kind of lovable design that makes you smile and think, this is definitely going to be good.

Lotte’s official product page for the Japanese strawberry version also states that the biscuits feature more than 500 “366 Days Happy Birthday March” designs, built around birthday dates, years, zodiac signs, and blood types.

That means you can search for a koala connected to a birthday, line up different designs like tiny pieces of art, and start having fun before you even eat one.

When I actually take the biscuits out of the box, they are just as pink as the package suggests. Each koala design is different, and that alone makes me want to inspect them one by one and ask, what kind of face is this one? It is the kind of thing that pulls me back into a childlike mindset immediately. And of course, finding a rare design always gives that tiny lucky feeling that Koala’s March has always done so well.

By the way, just like with my previous Koala’s March review, this time too, I did not get a design related to my own birthday.

Taste & Texture

Now for the actual tasting.

The first thing I do after opening the bag is always the same:

I bring it close and breathe in the smell.

That has basically become a ritual I have carried with me since childhood.

After enjoying the strawberry aroma, my personal way of eating Koala’s March is to look at each design for a moment and then drop them into my mouth one by one.

The moment I bite into the first piece, the biscuit breaks with a light, crisp sound. That texture is one of the biggest pleasures of this snack.

The biscuit is thin and lightly baked, with no heaviness and no oily feeling. It has a very easy, airy bite, but still keeps enough of a real baked-cookie character to feel satisfying. And while I am enjoying that crispness, the strawberry chocolate slowly follows from behind. I think that delayed little wave of strawberry flavor is one of the nicest things about this snack.

Koala's March Strawberry cross section and filling

When I break one open, I can clearly see the strawberry chocolate inside.

It is not filled to the absolute maximum the way the package illustration might make you imagine, but I think that is intentional. Leaving a bit of space is probably part of what creates that excellent light crispness. If the chocolate were packed in too tightly, that balance of crisp shell and smooth center would not feel nearly as good.

The strawberry chocolate itself matches sweet-tart strawberry notes with a rich milky softness. Because it uses strawberry powder, it does not fall into that obviously artificial “fake strawberry” zone. Instead, it has a more natural kind of sweet-and-sour flavor. Lotte’s ingredient listing for the Japanese product confirms the use of strawberry powder along with cream powder and milk ingredients, and that fits the flavor impression very well.

The aftertaste is clean, and that is one of the dangerous things about this snack. Before I notice it, I have already picked up another piece, and then another one after that.

Lotte is just too good at setting sweet traps.

Another clever point is the slight saltiness of the biscuit. It quietly lifts the sweetness of the strawberry chocolate, so the flavor ends up feeling more layered than “just sweet.” There is sweetness, yes, but also salt, acidity, and milky richness. That layered balance is why it never feels flat.

Because each koala is small, it is very easy to eat too many. But the total amount per box is 46g, which makes it a nice size when I just want a small snack or a little mood reset. Lotte’s official product page confirms the 46g content and the full nutrition panel per box.

The 366 Days Happy Birthday March concept may be a Japan-specific feature, but the broader idea of enjoying many different koala designs is something people can understand anywhere. That kind of world-scale shared enjoyment is one of the best things about this snack.

Final Thoughts

Koala’s March Strawberry is one of those snacks that looks simple at first, but the more carefully I pay attention to it, the more I feel how well-balanced it really is.

The pink biscuit is cute, the koala designs are endlessly fun to look through, and the crisp shell with strawberry chocolate inside still works beautifully. It keeps that childlike sense of fun, but it also has enough quality that eating it as an adult feels genuinely enjoyable rather than just nostalgic.

I would especially recommend it to people who used to love Koala’s March as children and want to rediscover it, people who like strawberry sweets with a light texture, and anyone who enjoys snacks where the design itself is part of the experience.

It is small, playful, and very easy to underestimate.

And then suddenly the whole box is gone.

If you see it, it is absolutely worth picking up at least once.
