Toppo Original Review – Japanese Snack by Lotte
Introduction
This article reviews Toppo Original, a chocolate snack made by Lotte that many people across Japan are familiar with.
Toppo was first released in 1994, and today it has become one of the standard chocolate snacks in Japan.
Packaging
On the front of the box, there is an illustration showing chocolate being filled inside the core of a crispy pretzel stick. Another image of chocolate appears below it, giving the impression that this snack contains plenty of chocolate.
In fact, the package clearly says:
“Plenty of chocolate all the way to the end!”
On the back of the box, there is a message that says:
“You can eat it without getting your hands dirty♪”
Below that, the package explains:
“Mild chocolate is filled all the way inside the fragrant and crispy pretzel.”
Inside the Package
Just like the description on the package, the hollow pretzel sticks are completely filled with sweet chocolate.
Inside each stick, the chocolate runs from one end to the other, which gives the snack a satisfying amount of chocolate in every bite.
One of the key features of Toppo is its easy-to-hold design.
Because the chocolate is inside the pretzel rather than coated on the outside, your fingers do not easily get covered in chocolate while eating.
That is a clever design.
Taste & Texture
The pretzel portion has a roasted flavor and a pleasant crunchy texture.
However, once the chocolate inside begins to melt slightly, the overall texture becomes a little softer.
Because of that, the overall impression is somewhat gentle rather than very crunchy.
At the same time, that softer balance makes it easy to keep eating one stick after another.
If you are not careful, it is easy to eat more than you planned.
Lotte produces many different flavors of Toppo, so I would like to try and review some of those variations in the future as well.
