Pretz Uma-Salad Review – Japanese Snack by Glico
This article reviews Pretz Uma-Salad, a snack made by Glico.
Pretz with salad flavor first appeared in 1969, and through many improvements such as flavor adjustments, package design changes, and box structure improvements, it has continued evolving over the years. Today it remains one of the classic snack products in Japan.
The current Uma-Salad Pretz appears to be the result of long-term development and research by Glico, aiming to improve the crispy texture and pleasant melt-in-the-mouth feeling.
By the way, “Uma”is a shortened form of“umami.”
Packaging
Package design of Pretz Uma-Salad Japanese snack sold in Japan.
The package states that the umami of bouillon and rock salt keeps looping.
Under the “Uma-Salad” label, the package also mentions that Alpenz Salz rock salt is used.
After looking it up, Alpenz Salz rock salt is a natural rock salt produced from a salt layer in the German Alps formed about 250 million years ago. It contains calcium and is known for its mild flavor and rich taste.
Because it flows easily and does not clump easily, it is often used in cooking such as meat dishes, tempura, and pasta. It is also popular because it enhances the natural flavor of ingredients.
Individual snack packs inside Pretz Uma-Salad.
On the back of the package, it says something like:
“You can enjoy the umami of savory bouillon together with a crispy and pleasant texture.”
The box also seems to include an interesting feature.
Inside the Package
When I tried to open the box to see the Pretz bag, I noticed a very convenient mechanism.
If you press with your thumb and hook your fingertip to lift it up, the top of the box opens easily.
This design allows you to open the box with one hand, which is surprisingly convenient.
Inside the box were two wide snack bags.
Taste & Texture
There is another small feature on the lower back side of the box.
When you open the orange section that likely says something like “easy snack pocket,” the box becomes a small stand that allows you to place the snack bag upright inside it.
I tried eating the Pretz.
To summarize briefly, the impression is:
“The umami is strong, and the salt balance is very good.”
That might sound like a common answer, but there are some noticeable details.
The pretzel sticks do not remain in the mouth for too long, they do not easily stick to the teeth, and the salt does not easily stick to your fingers when you pick them up.
Because of that, the eating experience feels very comfortable.
Since it is called salad flavor, vegetables should naturally be involved.
According to the information about this product, ten different vegetables are used in this Pretz Uma-Salad flavor.
In addition, bouillon and aromatic vegetable oil are included, and they seem to work very well together with the Alpenz Salz rock salt.
You can eat a whole box at a pace that makes it disappear very quickly.
Even one stick tastes good, but when you eat several sticks together, it almost feels as if you just ate a light breakfast.
